We are excited to share this guest post by Rory and Alexa James Partin, hosts of The ROAMies Podcast.
We needed an all-inclusive getaway. Even Alexa, who on a trip wants to get out and soak in everything a town has to offer, whose idea of fun is constantly going and doing, wanted to just sit and stare at the pool and the ocean for a few days… maybe even a week. Maybe with some occasional easy beach walks or evening paddles, but basically… to do “nothing.” To be served hand and foot without the hassle of worrying about tips or wondering when a restaurant is open. Just to call out and ask for what you want, when you want it because you can.
In our many years of marriage, we’ve had just one short trip like this. We stayed in Cancun at an all-inclusive resort, and it was great. Kind of like a cruise without the ship (and a boat ride on the water was less than a block away, at the nearby pier).
We were just in a season where we were both really craving another getaway like that. The kind where you rest deeply, let the world fade into the background, and let other people take care of the details for a while. We had visions of quiet beach days, poolside lounging, and slow mornings that melted into slow evenings.
That was the plan.
So we headed to Sirenian Bay in Placencia, Belize. Easy trip on Southwest Airlines. We’d been saving up miles, so why not?
When Rest and Exploration Meet in the Same Place
We quickly discovered that Placencia is one of those destinations that refuses to be only one thing. As peaceful as the beach is, the country itself calls you to explore.
Waterfalls. Chocolate making. River adventures or ocean paddling. Wildlife and culture. Every day presented the same question:
Stay still… or go explore?
And the real magic of Sirenian Bay Resort & Villas is that you do not have to choose.
It is one of the few all-inclusive experiences we have had where “doing nothing” and “doing everything” coexist beautifully. Rest is always available, but exploration is always within reach.
For couples or friends who travel differently, one ready for adventure, one craving stillness, Placencia is surprisingly easy. The area feels safe, welcoming, and walkable. With exploration guides and concierge support available through Sirenian Bay and their partners at Captain Jak’s, you can explore confidently without ever feeling like you’ve stepped too far outside the calm of the resort.
Our rhythm became simple.
Half the day out in Belize.
Half the day back on the beach.
And both felt equally restorative.
The Best of Both Worlds
Even on the days we stayed close, Sirenian Bay never felt stagnant or repetitive. The resort creates a kind of “soft adventure” environment. There’s enough engagement to awaken your body and mind, without disrupting the atmosphere of calm.
A slow morning could turn into:
• a spa visit
• time in the fitness center
• a few rounds of pickleball or tennis
• a paddleboard session (team Alexa)
• a round of mini golf (team Rory)
• learning to scuba dive right there on property
• or simply stretching out beside the pool or ocean
Nothing felt pressured. Nothing felt scheduled.
It is the rare kind of place that allows you to listen to what you need that day, instead of what you feel obligated to do on vacation.
Meeting the Man Who Built the Resort Changed the Way We Experienced It
One of the most meaningful parts of our stay was receiving a rare in-person tour by the founder himself, Brian Montgomery, and subsequently interviewing him in Episode 253 of our podcast, The ROAMies Podcast. These opportunities allowed us to get to hear Brian’s story and get to know not only him, but the heart behind the resort.
The resort already felt warm, welcoming, and intentional. But once we heard Brian’s story, the property felt different. It felt fuller, deeper, more rooted.
At 38 years old, Brian was given six months to live after an aggressive cancer diagnosis. Nine months later, following intense treatment and a bone marrow transplant, he found healing, and he and his wife Brenda emerged with a new lens on life.
They sold their company in Texas, set out to building a simple beach house somewhere beautiful, and eventually found Belize and a small stretch of coastline anchored by two palm trees.
That single dream villa became the seed for Sirenian Bay.
What followed wasn’t a traditional business expansion strategy. It was a gradual, heart-led unfolding.
And you can feel that story everywhere on the property.

A Resort Built Around People Instead of Product
Today, Sirenian Bay holds the distinction of being Belize’s only true all-inclusive mainland resort.
What makes it stand out isn’t the beachfront or the amenities. It is Brian’s philosophy of leadership and hospitality.
His “Above the Line” approach centers on:
• believing in people who have never been believed in
• investing in local youth
• treating staff with dignity
• leading through encouragement rather than control
The impact is something you notice immediately.
Staff don’t feel like employees. They feel like participants and partners in the guest experience, like friends. Guests don’t feel processed. They feel seen.
And that culture has earned the resort recognition from Expedia for delivering the best customer experience in Belize, something that feels unsurprising once you’ve spent time there.
Luxury there does not feel showy. It feels human.
Where We Stayed, Ate, and Unwound
We stayed in the Pelican Bungalow, a stunning two-story oceanfront home featuring handcrafted interiors built on site by local artisans in Sirenian Bay’s very own woodshop along with a private plunge pool overlooking the Caribbean. With only palm trees and sand between the villa and the water, it embodies a kind of barefoot elegance that feels grounded rather than flashy.
Dining here was a highlight of the trip. Head Chef Luis brings an elevated creativity and refinement to all-inclusive dining, whether through beachside dinners, private chef experiences, or thoughtfully curated menus that feel personal rather than mass-produced. The resort even has its own organic farm, allowing ingredients to be grown on site for a genuine farm-to-table experience, which thrilled Alexa’s plant-based heart, with Rory’s Cajun taste buds happily along for the ride.
Wellness and recreation carry that same intentionality.
From Inky’s, with its world-renowned mini golf course and pickleball courts, to the modern fitness facility and spa offering treatments built around local ingredients like banana leaf wraps and coffee scrubs, each experience feels connected to Belize rather than separate from it.
So… All-Inclusive or Adventure?
The answer, at least at Sirenian Bay, is both.
It’s one of the rare places where you don’t have to choose between deep rest and meaningful discovery. You can step outside the gates and explore waterfalls, cacao farms, wildlife, and culture… then return to a space designed for reflection, care, and ease.
It offers something more layered than “do nothing” relaxation or “full schedule” activity.
It offers a place where you remember that rest does not have to be passive, and exploration does not have to be exhausting.
For travelers heading to Placencia, especially couples or groups who vacation differently, Sirenian Bay Resort & Villas feels like a true home base. A place that lets you experience Belize fully while still feeling anchored, cared for, and restored.
And as this true boutique resort continues to grow with new villas and offerings, this quiet stretch of coastline in southern Belize remains one of those rare places where intention, story, and hospitality meet, and where both adventure and rest have room to breathe.
