Planning any kind of trip takes time: You must figure out the when, where and how of it all – including your flights, ground transport, accommodations, and activities. Here’s how to take the guesswork out of booking your trip to Belize.
Booking a tour package
Many Belize destinations offer a tour package that includes flights, accommodation and tailored experiences such as outdoor activities or cultural tours. This can be an easy way to quickly arrange your entire trip – and often at a discount. Packages and bundles can often be arranged with individual hotels or resorts, or through aggregators such as TripAdvisor or Expedia. These can be a great option for large groups or for those who are happy to have someone else handle the basics of their trip itinerary for them. At Sirenian Bay, we work in partnership with Captain Jak’s to create custom vacation packages for our guests.
Booking local flights and transportation
If you’re handling your own itinerary, one major factor to consider is getting around Belize. Fortunately, there are many local flights inland and out to the Cayes on a daily basis. While you can get a discount for paying cash at the airport, bear in mind that the local planes are small and flights can book up quickly, so consider booking ahead.
The two local airlines are Tropic Air and Maya Island Air. Both offer direct flights between Placencia and Belize’s major cities and destinations. Sirenian Bay is a registered agent for both airlines, and we are happy to book and manage your local flights.
Other options for getting around Belize include buses, taxis and shuttles. Car rentals are available, but we don’t recommend driving, particularly at night. If you’ve booked a tour package, note that local transportation – including to and from your resort – is often included.
Booking local accommodations
A search for hotels and vacation rentals in Belize yields plenty of results, but not all accommodations are created equally. When booking your local accommodations, carefully check location, included amenities and the cost of “extras”. For example, if a rental touts itself as being near the beach, use Google Maps to ensure that this is the case, as “near” can be a relative term. Similarly, check that your room has essentials such as air conditioning included as part of the price. You’ll also want to verify availability, check-in and check-out times, access during out-of-hours and the availability of on-site staff.
Speak to your vacation rental owners
While Google can be a great help, the best insights you’ll receive are from those much closer to home. When booking your accommodations, don’t be afraid to reach out to the owners of your vacation rental or the front desk of your resort with any questions about your stay. They’re almost certainly happy to help with inquiries about your room and amenities, as well as topics such as getting there, getting around, and reserving places on a tour or to a show or restaurant.
