Sustainability
Sirenian Bay is proud to be a part of the communities around us. We have made intentional decisions to support the people, environment, and economy of Placencia and beyond.

Our Commitment
Our Sustainability Efforts
- Hiring local contractors and artisans
- The gorgeous solid wood furniture found in each room and the carved doors on each accommodation were hand-crafted from Belizean wood, by Belizean artisans.
- Sirenian Bay recently added our own woodshop which employs Belizean woodworkers. This allows us to build more pieces in house (from furniture to arches for wedding to photo backdrops) and ensure we are making the best use of our resources.
- The laundry baskets in our villas were hand-woven in Belize.
- Much of the artwork throughout the resort was created by Belizean artisans.
- Guests enjoy personal toiletries that are made by Belizean companies, using local ingredients.
- Focus on the environment
- Many of the tables around the resort are repurposed from leftover wood – the base of a strangle tree, driftwood, or pieces of trees that could not be used for other projects.
- Sirenian Bay has an ever-expanding organic garden which provides many of the ingredients used in our restaurants.
- We repurpose the sargassum that washes in – an eyesore and nuisance for beach-goers – and use it to make fertilizer for the garden.
- Other Initiatives
- Belize is proud to be stewards of the second longest barrier reef in the world, and has gone to great lengths to protect that reef. We encourage visitors to help by using reef-safe sunscreen and limiting single-use plastics that can be dangerous to the sea life that depends on the reef.
- The tap water in Belize is not only safe, but tastes very good. However, we recognize the desire for a filtered option, so in each room you’ll find a water cooler with cooled, filtered water for your enjoyment.
- In our rooms, you’ll find LED bulbs wherever possible. We also encourage guests to turn off A/C units and TVs when leaving your room. (We have even installed wifi A/C remotes in each room so that our Front Desk can adjust the A/C if you forget.)
Social Responsibility
Manatee Conservation
Sirenian Bay is committed to supporting manatee conservation in Belize. Our name – Sirenian – is inspired by manatees. According to legend, sailors coming into the Caribbean saw these gentle giants and found them to resemble the “sirens of the sea” (mermaids) and they became know as “sirenians”.
Unfortunately, the more people enjoy the waters of Belize, the more danger the manatees are in. Boating in the lagoon has decreased the manatee population through injury and death, forcing the remaining manatees to find safer, quieter homes. Litter and water pollution continue to be a danger for the health of the manatees and other sea life.
When you visit Sirenian Bay, you can support manatee conservation efforts in Belize. When you purchase a Sirenian Bay Breeze, we donate $1 USD from each drink sale directly to manatee conservation efforts in Belize.
These donations support Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research in Belize and help fund local awareness efforts in schools, conservation camps & fairs, and support manatee rescue efforts.
Want to help more? You can donate directly or look for our “Giving Back” envelope in your room or at the front desk. Leave your gift in the envelope and indicate which program you’d like to support, then drop it off at the front desk.
Pack For A Purpose
Sirenian Bay is proud to be a part of the Placencia Peninsula community.
Our team is involved in several community initiatives:
- Maintenance and upkeep of the cemetery in neighboring Seine Bight Community
- Backpack drives for local schools
- Sponsoring local soccer teams
- Supporting the new score board for the Placencia soccer field
At this time our main focus is St. John’s Anglican Primary School in Placencia. We believe that giving back to our kids in the area will not only aid them to pursue their career and dreams, but it will also improve our society as a whole.
We are proud members of Pack for a Purpose, an initiative that also allows travelers to make a lasting impact in the communities you visit. If you save even a little room in your suitcase to bring supplies for the projects we support, you’ll make a priceless impact in the lives of our local children and families.
Please click here to see what supplies are needed. No room in your suitcase? You can make a donation using the “Giving Back” envelope in your room – just drop it off at the Front Desk. Or contact us for a US shipping address to send supplies.
